Part of my wedding photography planning process is to create a wedding day photography timeline for my couples. While all weddings are unique, they all follow a similar flow in regard to timing. One of the big questions I ask my couples as I plan their wedding photography timeline is if they plan on having a first look.
A first look is a moment that occurs on a wedding day when the bride and groom see each other for the first time, usually before the ceremony. This moment is planned and orchestrated by the photographer, and is often done in a private location where the couple can have a few moments to themselves.
During a first look, the couple will sometimes exchange personal vows, gifts, or other tokens of their love and affection. They may also take some time to talk to each other, hug, or just enjoy each other’s company before the ceremony begins.
So, should you plan a first look for your wedding?
The first look is a totally optional part of a wedding day, and not all couples choose to do it.
Some couples prefer to wait until the ceremony to see each other for the first time, as they believe that this adds to the excitement and anticipation of the day. However, others find that a first look allows them to feel more relaxed and calm before the ceremony, and can be a great way to start their wedding day off on a positive note.
A first look can be especially helpful if you’re on a tight schedule and need to make the most of your time for photos.
Ultimately, whether or not you choose to do a first look is a personal decision that depends on your preferences and priorities. It’s important to consider your own feelings and desires, as well as those of your partner, when making this decision.
